Byfleet Whites (A)

Another peerless Sunday morning with a stiff breeze to sharpen the senses brought a full Griffins squad out after the Easer break.  With no training or matches for a couple of weeks we weren't quite sure what to expect, although they were all brimming with excitement at the prospect of a match against the team against whom the Griffins recorded their first victory earlier in the season.

The match started well with a scene reminiscent of Di Matteo's wonder goal vs Middlesborough in 1997 - Torin streaking through left midfield to slot it past the Byfleet keeper in the opening sequence of the game - a great start.  The Griffins continued to dominate the first half with Ethan striking his first of the season from distance and Torin adding a second to his brace.  Good performances also across the team with solid defensive play silencing the Byfleet attack and keeping the ball well away from Ben in goal.  (HT 0-3).

Substitutions at half time and well deserved Jammy Dodgers for the first half heroes brought James O and Theo into the play, both continuing where the team left off in the first half with Theo menacing against the Byfleet defence, poaching possession and adding a further 2 goals to his impressive season tally.  James O also showed his best with a quick turn on the right side of the box and a hard drive from a tight angle screaming past the keeper into the inside side-netting - possibly goal of the season so far.  He was unlucky not to score again, striking the post with almost enough venom to knock the goal over with what would have been a thoroughly deserved second. Through the second half, Byfleet were able to restore their honour with 2 goals as Claygate sat back a little allowing some redress. (FT 2-6)

A cracking match with plenty of action and a team now clearly standing well in their own right.  What growth we have seen across the season, not only in legs and boots but character as well.  This is a great team who clearly enjoy their time together and are now sharing well-deserved success from a lot of hard training and early losses.  One more match to go against the old foes of Brooklands and a real chance to finish the season on a real high.  Great stuff.
